In Case You Need Help

When you are sick, you go see a doctor. When you would like to learn a language, you seek a teacher. When you want to create a resume, whom do you request help from? I ask a lot of new graduates this question, and the majority of them give me the following answers: I copied and pasted, then modified another one, I asked a friend to make it for me, I will go to a cyber café… They will do it for me. Frankly speaking, I do not like the last answer, because to be working in a cyber café and being able to fix PCs does not mean to be knowledgeable of what to do or to avoid when creating a resume. That man in the cyber café is not always able to put what you wish to mention in your resume. He might not understand your field of expertise or studies. He might be good in  copy past  but not in translating your skills into words. You need to make it yourself, or to consult an experienced person, who might be a friend or a relative who has already been working for long years (long ex

One resume for all jobs!

Now that you have become (and I assume you have always been) aware of the mistakes people make, while preparing their resumes, I hope that you do not make a last one. We do not use the same shoes for all events. Casual shoes are not for a soccer game. Trainers are not designed for weddings. the same thing regarding sandals; you cannot meet customers wearing the most expensive ones. Is the idea now clear? Let me make it clearer! It is impossible to use the same resume in all your job applications, especially when your studies and experience have made you skillful in several fields. If you have earned a fundamental bachelor of arts in languages, you can look for a training as a teacher at private schools, translator, hotel receptionist. Other types of training are open for you, but you need to look for them smartly. Delivering the same resume among those companies will not serve you that much. Every resume has to be designed for that specific job. This is because eve

To Submit

Now that your resume looks professional, the next step is to submit it. How? Good question. There are several ways to submit your resume to either a job agency or directly to the employer. 1 – Submitting your resume directly: It is the best way to look for a job. Sending resumes only when there is a job vacancy on a website is not always the best choice all over the world. This is because not all the vacancies appear online. Sometimes knocking the doors pays. In the Technopolis of Rabat, Morocco, there is a recruitment office, in which you can submit your resume. This is because only employees have access to the place. The office there is in the position of job agencies. To submit your resume directly is always a preferred choice. On the other hand, you can print tens of resumes and deliver them yourself. if you can teach something and visit a district where there are several schools and institutes, it is a good idea. I remember when I was looking for a job, I used to prin

Layout

Remember that it is a resume. It is not a Da Vinci picture. It is not a painted board. It is just a resume. It is not harmful to use a color in the main sections; blue, for example. But please avoid using colors like gray, yellow or any color which has no utility. One color to highlights the main sections and the main skills is enough. You need to keep it professional and to take the following into consideration: Simple template: Sometimes some candidates choose very complex resume templates. The HR manager finds it so hard to extract the information they are looking for. If you like to complicate things for people, please make your resume the least complex ever. Remember:  choosing a very misleading or complex template does not mean you have a good resume. Size: 14 for the main sections and 12 for details is enough. Please avoid using more than two. All the fonts on Word: Using all the fonts in Word is not professional. It makes a document hard to focus on and som

External Links

You can add some external links to your resume, but you need to pay attention. Your carefulness needs to be at its top, because if you do not pay much attention to your  personal branding , whoever googles you will get wrong or incomplete information about who you are. Linked In : Your Linked In profile must be identical to your resume. Otherwise, HR will think you are not sure of what you are doing. You need to update both of them whenever you learn a new skill or get a new certificate or diploma. Facebook : Avoiding Facebook profile is always better. If you are professional, you can put a link to your Facebook page. When you are famous enough to have a   verified Facebook account , try to make sure you have no friend on your list who is working in the company you are applying for a job in. Always clean your account and make sure what you post does not scratch your image. Also, make sure you do not take part in “bad” groups. YouTube : When I submitted my CV to  Marrake

Word or PDF

We can imagine anything, except for a handwritten resume. This very important document has to be as formal as possible. I am not saying that  handwriting  scratches the image of official documents or makes them look informal. In some countries, people still need to write handwritten applications. Maybe because the recipient needs to know how good the applicant’s handwriting is, since there is an agreement that it reveals a lot about one’s  personality through handwriting. Your resume should be made on a Word page, preferably. Why? Good question! Microsoft Word helps you instantly correct your spelling mistakes, which are the worst things to make in resumes. It enables you to choose a nice format to show how elegantly the official documents given to you will be treated. Using some files which you are the only person who knows how to install the driver for does not help. Instead, the file might not be openable and your candidature will reach the trash as soon as the HR receives

Informaics

As an interviewer, it is good to hire people who have some knowledge of informatics. It is good to hire people who can: Connect PCs with printers and other devices, Install and uninstall software, Master basic software and those needed in the job, Have done some informatics projects. It is not enough to put the following only in this section: Informatics: Word, Excel & Windows Movie Maker. Instead, it is always better to show what you can do with that software, especially when you do not master or know any of the “professional” one. The example I shall illustrate here is the  Microsoft Office . In many resumes, I see “Microsoft Office” without a single explanation from the candidate of what they can do with it. A resume can look better if the candidate puts it this way: Informatics: Microsoft Office : Excel: Billing, Stock Management. Here, the candidate should have worked on an example and bring it either in a USB or can even bring her laptop with him

Languages

This section is the poorest one ever in most resumes. Candidates mistakenly stop at listing the languages they master… or  think  they master: Languages: Chinese,   English  &  Spanish . It is always good to list the languages in an alphabetical order. The worse mistake is made, when candidates say nothing about this section. Instead, the “ Languages ” part of the resume can be used to impress the interviewer, either by putting some important details in it or through talking about what you can do with those languages. On your resume you need to: List the languages you master, Avoid adding languages you like but know very little about, Put what you can do with those languages (presentations, writing reports, translation, or teaching). Here is an example: Languages: Arabic, English & French: Translation, presentations, teaching & public speaking. the distinction is highly palpable between the two examples. The second one says much about your linguistic s

Professional Experiences

Why do employers seek experienced people? Have you ever raised this question? By the end of this articles, you will have understood why, but now, let us start with revealing the importance of this section in your CV. In this section, you show that you have done something between now and somewhen in the past. Generally between the time you submit your job application to your future employer and the day on which you got your diploma. What does this section tell about you to your employer? It gives an idea about: How well you are able to respond to the instructions, How knowledgeable you are, To what extent you can work under stress, How reliable you are, How you deal with complexities. Someone with one year experience as a receptionist cannot, generally, have been exposed to as much stress and as many experiences as another one whose experience exceeds 5 years… If your future superior works in a very busy company, he cannot hire a young person with small experience,

Phone Number

is always best to use a reachable phone number. Your phone has to be working. If you have a problem of battery or any other component of it, please fix it. You might get a call from the recruiter at any time. There are several  reasons to have more than one phone number , but it is always best to put one in your resume. Yes! A lot of resumes contain more than one phone number. When a recruiter receives such a resume, immediately, these ideas rise on his mind: What phone number shall I start first? The candidate has more than one phone, and still looking for a job! Does the candidate think we have time to try all these numbers? If we hire this candidate, will he come to work with two phones on hands? The candidate is easily  distractable . An employee, or a trainee, who has more than one phone number, or two cell phones, is likely to receive at least twice the calls other people with one phone do. He is more exposed to  distraction   than anybody else, and this can cause s

Email Address

You perfectly know how important it is to have a place to live in. No company would hire a homeless person. They will need your mail address to send you checks, documents or anything sendable via post. We discussed how the mail address has to be, and here we are discussing how the E-mail address should look like; since it  is almost impossible to start an organized business without using emails. Imagine that you are a recruiter, and you received a CV with an email address which looked more or less like this: 142557968tin_tan_hahaha@…com What would be your impression? Would you think that the sender is serious enough to work with? Let me share a part of my experience in this field. In 2012 the company I have been working in was hiring, and we received a big number of CVs. One of them included an email address like (I cannot put it here, sorry) this: princess of love @ … Imagine you are a customer and you received an email like this, would you open it? Of course no. It lo

Picture

When it comes to pictures used on CVs, candidates get confused whether to put one or not. In fact, it is not compulsory. Yet, some jobs really give importance to look such as: Models, Security guards(sometimes with their dogs), Models, Fitness coaches , Cabin crews . If you feel that you need to put it, please make sure that it: Is like the one on your ID or passport, Clear enough, Shows your face (for models or flight attendants, HR require a picture of the whole posture.), Shows a light smile, Be YOUR OWN picture… Yes! I did receive a CV with a picture not of the candidate… maybe she copied/pasted a CV but forgot to change the picture. On the other hand, it should not: Be in black and white Too dark, Very shiny, Have been taken while you are frowning, wearing sunglasses or hidden behind a big beard, Be very old. In your picture, you need to be wearing some professional clothes, a suit and a tie are always better than a t-shirt. As per girls, they need t

Headline

Attractive resume headlines (title or profile) play a big role in attracting the employer’s attention. They enormously help job seekers show their future employer what he will gain by hiring them. It is what he first sees in resumes, and if it is written the right way, chances of hiring multiple in seconds. When you would like to add a title to your resume, you need to make sure it: Is written in a readable font, Includes keywords, Concise and precise, Shows the value you can add, Highlights your core skills, Is placed somewhere in the top. The headline makes it easier for the employer to categorize your resume. Those which do not include any headline force the employer to go through them to see what position suits the candidates, especially if they obtained a diploma allowing them to do more than one job. This is a waste of time, especially if there is no job opening at all. When you add a headline, or a title, to your resume, the employer who reads it becomes able to
